THE MATTER OF WHAT REMAINS
Presented during Milan Design Week 2025, this installation by Terraformæ and FROM LIGHTING explores the hidden value of production waste.
What purpose can be found in what
is produced only to be discarded, piled on
the side, regarded as necessary scrap?
Terraformæ and FROM LIGHTING arrived
at an answer through dialogue, sharing an
instinct: that what is left behind is not
a failure of the process, but an invitation
to look more carefully.
The terracotta offcuts from Fornace
S.Anselmo’s production of Sk1n, ordinarily
excluded and discarded, become here
the primary material. Not recycled to assume
a new form, but reactivated: cut, arranged,
embedded, glazed, and held in light.
The same offcut becomes both the body
of a lamp and the ribbing of a tile. Light moves across glaze and shadow, drawing out a depth that was always there to be unveiled.
What appeared to be waste reveals itself
as the most essential part.
